KMUD Radio reports on the March 30th, 2025, town hall, where the issue of Palestine was the most contentious issue:
Several attendees accused Huffman of being complicit in what they described as genocide in Gaza. One of the most impassioned voices came from Arcata artist and activist Karpani Burns, who referenced graphic images of dead Palestinian children and questioned Huffman’s moral stance….
In the report, Huffman is quoted as responding to demands he end his support for Israel by saying this, as reported by KMUD:
Huffman responded by acknowledging the suffering of Palestinians and said he opposed the scale of Israel’s military response, while maintaining his support for the existence of a Jewish and democratic Israeli state. “I’m probably in a position where I please absolutely no one on this issue,” Huffman said. “But I do believe that the State of Israel should exist… and I also believe there should be a Palestinian state with security and peace.”
Huffman is wrong. He indeed does please Netanyahu and the Israeli war machine. If Huffman funds the war machine with billions on Monday, criticizes it harshly on Tuesday, I pretty much guarantee they still love him on Wednesday. They don’t give a shit about his supposed concerns about the details of the military response; he provided the weapons and that’s all that counts.
At this town hall, Huffman also cast blame Palestinians and their supporters for the election of Trump. The truth, however, is that these are the very people who worked tirelessly to warn Biden and then Harris and other Democratic leaders that a ceasefire was essential to defeating Trump, while Biden, despite Biden’s explicit lies to the contrary, NEVER demanded a ceasefire from Israel, as his staff and Israeli officials admit. See this article by Nathan Robinson.
It turns out funding genocide is bad politics. Huffman is amazed that people of goodwill have the audacity to keep bringing up the issue, to hold him accountable for his complicity in crimes against humanity. We will never forget. But it is not too late for Huffman to go in a better direction, to bring some measure of decency to his office. Demand that Huffman call for an immediate arms embargo against Israel.
